Mary - Brad

I have a Catholic church a block away, I am not Catholic, my brother is,, and was a priest, but I believe these icons will endure history and mean a great deal to many people for times to come.

This is a beautiful shot! The setting takes it out of the purely religious context. The garland of flowers on her head seems to link back to the pre-Christian era when Nature goddesses were widely venerated. Mary seems to embody both the New Testament story and a much older one. I believe she speaks to those who find the modern church a rather masculine entity, not all that friendly to women and children. She provides a feminine and maternal voice, along with the Magdalene. Just my opinion.

Very good point Brent. If I had a hat, I'd tip it to you. ;o)

How could science prove/disprove something you can not perceive? Anthropologically I think the symbols we venerate now will give a big indication of society - in the 1900's the priests preached fire and brimstone - nowadays I never hear the word Hell even mentioned.

Do you wonder, if science and other things in the future solidly proved these ideas and beliefs to be wrong, that people would look at this statue and find it odd that people worshiped this woman? Would it be like how odd it was that once not long ago, people thought the earth was flat? You would hate to be on the wrong side of this debate though. It would be worse that falling off the edge of the world.
