under-exposed

worried about burning out the hotspots in the clouds, I have under-exposed this one a at least a half-stop too much...the approach seemed to work for the sky, but shortchanges the trees on Prevost Island...that is the Portlock Point lighthouse, passed during the ferry trip to Victoria

Self diagnosis is always a good thing; but the light-shack has a great standout appearance now.

I actually love the results; makes the light house so important. V

It works really well, great detail in the clouds and that cute little lighthouse really stands out against the dark trees. V

Agree with previous viewers - the sky needed this exposure to bring out the clouds and it has highlighted the lighthouse perfectly.

I like those heavy clouds! V

It's still a very well composed image and works well, the light on the lighthouse is just right and the sky is fantastic. v

A ND gradated filter might do the trick, or two shots with exposures for top and bottom and then merged in PS. Nevertheless its a pretty good shot and a great scene. V

This is a difficult exposure with these strong contrasts. It would be easy to blow out the sky, so underexposing worked well here because you still got some details in the trees. Personally I shoot all landscapes in manual mode rather than using the exposure compensation. I find it is easier and faster to change the exposure, and I like having complete control in situations like this rather than letting the camera do the thinking. Lovely peaceful composition by the way with the glassy water, the lone lighthouse and that beautiful cloudscape. "V"

The underexposure is effective here, David,
not only for the clouds but the lighthouse. I like
this image very much. V.

The slight under exposure brings out the beautiful clouds and highlights that delightful lighthouse....V

While the tree area is dark, it does make that delightful little light house pop. Looks like a pretty trip on that ferry ride. The clouds are lovely!

If I remember correctly, we kept looking over at this island for eagles (never saw any though....). The sky is beautiful David!
