Father Mathew, Apostle of Temperance, on St Patrick’s Street. Theobald Mathew (1790-1856) was an
Irish teetotalist reformer who established the Cork Total Abstinence Society, which evolved into the
Knights of Father Mathew, spreading throughout Ireland and later in the USA. It is estimated that
more than 7 million took the Pledge of Abstinence under his influence.
