The Woodpecker is taking a brief break from chasing its sought after mate. In the end it got its brief reward, but man did he have to work for it as you can tell by its panting with open beak and projecting tongue. Actually, there were four (mostly three) R-h Woodpeckers chasing each other on this hot day. I suspect that there was only one female and that the males were trying to win over the lady whilst at the same time engaging in aerial combat to drive away the competition.
