This little Redstart male first came to my backyard yesterday. He came very close to me, sat on the deck railing, the lawn chairs, the flower pots etc. At one point it actually briefly landed on my shoulder. Never before have I seen a Redstart in my yard. Yesterday,I also saw a female Redstart, a Bay-breasted Warbler, a Magnolia Warbler, six Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, three Brown-headed Cowbirds as well as several American Finches and various Sparrows in my yard - quite a day.
Today, the male Redstart was back. It spent considerable time flying up/down or sitting in front of our large kitchen windows as it could see its image in them. It desperately seemed to want to get at its image on the other side of the glass. I was afraid it might injure itself so I tried to gently chase it away. It, however, had other ideas and didn't want to leave. It again brushed my arm, flew into my garage, then into our shed, onto the picnic table and chairs, on to the deck rail etc. before finally settling on a basement window where it could also see itself. I observed it for about an hour, then went in for supper. After supper, it was still flying around the yard and in front of our windows.
The above is a full frame shot of the Redstart perched on a corner post of our deck.
