Progression

The Anthony Gormley installation 'Another Place' consists of 100 life size male nude statues (of himself in cast iron), embedded into the sands along a 3 kilometre stretch of the Mersey Estuary at Crosby. The statues are on or below the high water mark and are immersed by the sea every day.

Originally derided by locals, they are now so popular that they have been retained well beyond their original removal date of 2006 (they were intended to go to New York).

Following a successful appeal the statues are now considered a permanent fixture and have proved to be a great attraction to tourists.

Like the bananalambs in Liverpool I have never seen one vandalised, which in these times says a huge amount both for the people of Merseyside and the appeal of these works of public art.

Cool shot. Very interesting storyline. Public artworks are often misunderstood at the beginning.
