Garry Oak trees are wonderful subjects to photograph at all times of the year,
unfortunatley they are dissapearing due increases in population and expansion
of roads, housing and business into their native habitat.
Garry Oak facts: Garry Oak is a slow growing tree and the only native species
of oak tree in Canada. Collectively, Garry Oak and their associated ecosystems
are among the most endangered in Canada. Once common in coastal areas of
southwest British Columbia, less than 5% of these ecosystems remain in
near-natural condition. At this time, because so much habitat has been lost
or degraded, 116 species of plants, mammals, reptiles, birds, butterflies
and other insects are officially listed as “at risk” in these ecosystems. The
Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve (on Vancouver Island) is regarded as one of the
top-ten natural wonders of BC.
