1st - "The Player of Games"

Cheltenham, Glos

(Sci-fi novel by Scottish author Iain M Banks)

Finn takes his PC games seriously - I was dancing round the house with a beer and crisps, gearing myself up for the bells at midnight, he was completely engrossed in whatever he was playing. But we both stopped long enough to see the new year in together

The off-camera flash was placed face-on but out of shot - this illuminated the face and deepened the shadows. The shot was opened into CS3 and desaturated; a lithograph effect was created by altering the Red and Green channels in Curves. A Diffuse Glow was then added to make the highlights stand out; lastly, a bit of Dodge and Burn was applied to the highlights and dark areas respectively, then I resized for the web

Your use of fill light and subtle Photoshop techniques has enhanced this image from journalism to art. You tell the story to perfection, well done.

You can tell he is right into that game... I am glad he stopped long enough to celebrate :) Happy New Year!

Great dramatic shot and clearly concentrating on the important things.

An impressive start, Doug.
This image reminds me of an almost B&W picture I took of my daughter. The difference: I didn't use the flash. Her face was lit by the light of her laptop:

In years to come, this shot will be very special to him. As we enter the year 2010, it is always interesting to look back. What would you have been doing on New Year's Eve when you were his age?
Ronald Bijtenhoorn01-Jan-2010 17:12

Layered complexity. I like your personal challenge added to the monthly. Very well done pairing. The light works well to add a veiled mystery to the subject. YES! I really like this Doug.
