14th - "Map Reference 41°N 93°W"

Cheltenham, Glos

(Wire's 1979 single, from the album '154')

Art-rock punksters Wire with a driving little number about cartography :o)...how cool is that?

Don't know if this works or not, it's a pretty naff photo but what with Chrimble shopping and all those "let's put it off til December" things at work beginning to bite my backside, it's all I could manage over the weekend. This is a quick shot of the very excellent OS 1:25000 scale Explorer map of Orkney, showing the very north-west of West Mainland around the parish of Birsay. It would be very pretentious and poncy of me to say that this is my spiritual home, so I won't, but you get the drift. Shameless plug (it IS Christmas after all) but I have several galleries of Orkney as sub-galleries to my Scotland gallery...please feel free to stop by :o)

I should confess that what made me want to do this pic was seeing those square and rectangular fields all over the place...talk about organised!!

Wow, having your own Bay!! You have achieved quite something. :)
Lots of shapes in it too.
Mieke WA Minkjan15-Dec-2009 06:48
LOL, perfect a bay named after you....
the GPS would give the exact longitude and latitude!!
borisalex15-Dec-2009 06:20

Thinking out of the box and right into the rectangles and squares....perfect! Great idea.
Phillip Normanton14-Dec-2009 22:23
LOL - I thought JJ was getting all scientific and techy there :o) Those fields do fit the challenge well though! Caves - my favourite :o))

Great idea showing your special place in this fine shot of an OS Map. I have OS maps for large sections of the Northwest from my time in England.

I see a lot of rectangles. 'The long and winding road' would be the wrong title for this, I think.

How wonderful having a island named after you!
Good idea.

So a clever entry, Doug! Great idea.
Johnny JAG14-Dec-2009 20:08
That's worryingly regular compared with the random field patterns I'm used to.
Barbara Heide14-Dec-2009 19:40
I can see you were brought up in the caves... jolly evolution! Now you are even computer knowledgable...
Kevin Chester14-Dec-2009 19:38
It looks like a exploreres paradise
Chris14-Dec-2009 19:34
Superb entry - but have you checked? You may have a connection...or maybe we are actually in contact with the Laird of Birsay...?
malcolm haslam14-Dec-2009 19:27
Nicely squared and rectangled, Doug. I remember Uncut magazine doing their top 100 singles (years ago), and this offering from Wire sat at a nicely rounded No 40, between Richard Hell and the Voidoids' Blank Generation...and Heaven 17's Fascist Groove Thang. Obviously I've kept the list!

You are quite clever Doug! Very well done!
