(1981 single by The Comsat Angels)
In 1981 I was a spotty yoof, a year into my studies (cough!) at Uni and enjoying life tremendously (ooerr). It was a gob-smacking year here in the UK for album releases and totally brilliant contemporary music (Echo & The Bunneymen's Heaven Up Here, Heaven 17 - Penthouse & Pavement, Magazine's Magic Murder & The Weather; Gang of Four - Solid Gold; Joy Division - Still; Cabaret Voltaire - Red Mecca; Killing Joke - What's THIS For...! to name but a few...) but for me the absolute highlight was the release of the single 'Eye of The Lens' and subsequent album 'Sleep No More' by Sheffield's finest, The Comsat Angels, their 'difficult second album' after 1980's 'Waiting For A Miracle'.
An awe-inspiring mix of dark melodies and killer vocals, The Comsat Angels were quite literally fantastic - my favourite band during that whole period, and one whose tunes still whirl around my head over a quarter of a century later.
And so, after almost 29 years, I dust off the record deck, slip the 12in disc onto the platter and play this wonderful song once again; I remember it like yesterday but a sudden thought comes to me...wouldn't this be a great Challenge entry? So topical, and still relevant despite the passing of the years :o))...and so here it is, a modern day visual interpretation of the eye of the lens
