Free Food

Lake Pontchartrain

If we catch them ourselves we call it free food. Can be caught in Lake Pontchartrain, as these are, or the Gulf of Mexico.
We boil them with lots of seasoning, cook them in gumbo, or crab stews. If you've the patience, you can pick all the meat out for crab salad. And, you can make crab au'gratin, crab cakes and crabs all kinds of ways.

Takes me back to my childhood days on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Blue Crabs from the bay.
jypsee03-Sep-2009 17:15
Some of my fondest memories are of the times my kids and I spent crabbing; and the "boils" with the neighbors which followed.
Cindi Smith03-Sep-2009 14:14
Oh yeah...love blue crabs! Enjoy them to the fullest!
Phil Orgeron03-Sep-2009 12:39
So many predators are after that sweet meat. No wonder that shell is a powerful fortress! You're making me hungry Coleen!

Nice catch. Fabulous photo. I'll have mine au'gratin. V
Neal Nye03-Sep-2009 11:22
A nice shot with all those colors. But it looks like there's as much work as there is pleasure in that basket!

I want me some. Do you know what jumbo lump meat costs in the supermarket? Great photo of these crabs. Almost a bushel.
Stephanie03-Sep-2009 10:05
Now I love this kind of free food! A bushel of crabs are selling for big bucks in Delaware.
A beautifully shot image.

Like you we have lots of seafood in our area...I'm not keen on the effort they take though :) A good shot, Coleen

I do like your capture, but the idea that they will be eaten...
Doug Cruden03-Sep-2009 06:19

thatfarmgirl 03-Sep-2009 04:14
We don't have many crabs in the Chesapeake anymore...a lot of ours come from LA via Southwest Airlines!
Bill Ewart Jr03-Sep-2009 03:07
GRRRRRRRRREAT shot! I love it! Our crabs look quite a bit different here! Nice shot!~
Dennis Hoyne03-Sep-2009 03:03

carol j. phipps03-Sep-2009 02:20
Reminds me of my days in Baltimore, Maryland where we crabbed every day in the summer.
Walter Otto Koenig03-Sep-2009 02:17
I have a steam pot and old bay seasoning and of course beer to steam them in. We used to eat a lot of these in DC. If these are like Chesapeake Blue Crabs it looks like you need to separate the sooks and the jimmies. Sooks are for soup and jimmies for steaming.
Fay Stout03-Sep-2009 02:14
What I really love is soft-shell crabs. Haven't had one in years. They are quite pricey here. Only problem with crabs is... there's a lot of pickin' to get your fill.
Guest 03-Sep-2009 02:13
Nice looking group....good eating too we'll bet.
sschex03-Sep-2009 01:39
