I learnt recently where the German expression 'guter Rutsch' comes from. Apparently it has nothing to do with slipping and sliding, but originates in the Jewish new year's day, 'Rosh Hashanah'. So really, you're wishing each other a 'guten Rosh' :-) Hope yours went well and that 2009 will continue in the same vein!
