On a Jet Plane…

Over London

For some reason this image really hits the mark for me.
Yet it breaks compositional rules.
• The subject of the shot is not that well defined
• The subject is moving out of the picture
• The space is behind the subject, when convention says you should move into the space
• The subject is not on any of the Thirds lines ...

So why does it work for me..
I like the lighting of the background which draws the eye towards the plane.
The plane whilst not well defined jumps out the screen as the focal point.
My name looks good in the bottom left hand corner :)
I just like the very simplicity of the shot, with the drama of the background

I had this on full whack using a 70- 300mm zoom, the other plane was some distance away..

1/500s @ f5.6, ISO 50 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Superb capture, excellent detail. I love shots that make people seem insignificant.
Guest 22-Feb-2007 22:47
Yeah, but a plane (which is clearly) departing *into* the frame aint gonna work is it? Thats why I think it works.

I like it.

Nicely composed image.

Being unconventional has worked well in this shot, movement away from rather than movement to. I like this take on movement.
Guest 22-Feb-2007 17:58
I really like this. I guess it is the simplicity. Good job!

Your right there is something about this image, for me it the dark skies vignetting the image, like an opening out of the "gloomyness"
mind you, wish I was on it!!

Stuff the rules. As Maiike says, it underlines the theme. I like the dark corners bringing our focus into the light and plane. It's also a little melancholic for me -- traveling all the time, away from family and friends, is hard and very wearing. The plane leaving the frame says you're off again.

Great shot, Ian. I like the sense of depth and distance. The mix of grey and white clouds create a strong mood. I agree, your signature looks best on the left. :)
