Short-eared Owl

(asio flammeus)
In Scotland the Short-eared Owl is both a resident breeding bird and a winter migrant. The highest numbers of breeding birds are found in upland areas with significant numbers on some islands including Orkney, the Uists, Islay and Mull. Many Scottish birds will migrate south for the winter but may be replaced by migrants from northern Europe. Winter migrants can congregate in small groups and remain faithful to a particular spot as long as a food source is available.
It is commonly seen in daylight unlike other owls which are mostly nocturnal.
