Pink-footed Goose

The Pink-footed Goose is the most common of the winter migrant geese in Scotland. It usually arrives in Scotland from its breeding grounds in Iceland in early September and can be present in very large numbers with flocks of over 30,000 birds at certain preferred staging posts like the Loch of Strathbeg and Montrose Basin. The flocks will then disperse to regular wintering areas such as Aberlady Bay, Loch Lomond area, South Lanarkshire etc though many move on further south to winter in England. It is fascinating to watch a flock of Pink-feet from a distance and observe the constant movement and squabbling within the flock and to see how a family group will somehow keep together in the confusion.
