From Aphrodisias we drove to the famous tourist attraction of Pamukkale which lies near the big modern town of Denizli, the centre of Turkey's textile industry.
The amazing white travertine terraces of Pamukkale at the ancient city of Hierapolis are formed when hot volcanic spring water loaded with calcium carbonate loses its carbon dioxide and the water evaporates as it flows down the hill side. This leaves behind gleaming white deposits of calcium carbonate (chalk, or is it limestone) which build up in steps and terraces. Tourists are permitted access to a small part of the terraces allowing you a very slippery paddle in one of the pools.
We spent that night at the very classy Richmond Hotel near to Pamukkale.
