The Mallard duck is one of the most common ducks in Scotland and also worldwide. It is the originating species for many domesticated wildfowl. It can be found almost anywhere that there is water – which is not in short supply in Scotland ! For many people ‘feeding the ducks’ in the local park and seeing a raft of little ducklings is a first introduction to birds. The drake Mallard with its bottle green head is a handsome bird in breeding plumage. The female duck has a habit of building nests in most unusual places.
