The Brünnich's Guillemot, or Thick-billed Murre, is a rare vagrant to Scotland. Its normal range is far to the north with its nesting colonies in the high arctic - it is the northern species of the Common Guillemot. There are more dead birds found in Scotland than live ones.
The bird in these photographs was found in an unlikely place - in the busy harbour at Anstruther in Fife on the east coast of Scotland. It was in an advanced state of moult with hardly any flight feathers. It remains to be seen whether it will survive or not.
Update - sadly, the bird was found dead in the harbour two days after these photos were taken.
