Just about everything you can think of is strange about this image but I find it fascinating and I hope you do too.

I have visited a few caves in various countries but thus far this has been the singularly most impressive of them. There are three monstrous interconnected caverns that effectively create a colossal underground chamber of limestone fantasy 160m across. The Grotte D'Orgnac is quite subtley lit but of course that lighting is generally subdued to the point where cameras struggle. This was taken at 1/15 second handheld at 3200 ISO. The camera even managed to focus and the results are pretty impressive. Look at the stalagmite growing from the floor and the water splash of calcium carbonate compounds which eventually contributes to its growth. Scale is difficult to come to terms with but the gap between the stalagmite and stalagtite is around 35 metres and that drip is about a litre of water. Timing it was a nightmare.
