Before NYU took control of this property, this south entrance was open to Washington Square Village (WSV) Sasaki Garden and Landscape, lined with trees, bushes and grass, inviting the public to enjoy the interior gardens. More than 20 years ago, NYU locked the gate, let the plants die and blacktopped the area. The current NYC Government and NYU2031 Plan calls for the destruction of the entire area from LaGuardia Place to Mercer Street to build 2 new boomerang skyscraper buildings with connecting pathways that will destroy street park strips, a prized children's playground away from street traffic, the WSV Sasaki Garden and Landscape, and well over 400 mature trees and bushes. NYU has called a small garden plot in their plan - a "Philosophy Garden".
