Joop's Dog Log - Sunday Feb 15

This is about food. Not cookies, real food.
I’m always hungry you know. It’s never enough. I could eat all day. But my humans won’t let me.
I’ve gained a few kilo’s since I came to live with them and they don’t want me to get fat.
I get small rations of dry senior dog chunks four times a day, and veggies of course
(carrot, cucumber, lettuce), and the occasional lambburger, and some hard bones to chew on.
Now my human has met this dog owner who said that if a dog is always hungry he should eat green beans.
So my human went to the store to buy the beans. The organic kind!
Green beans are supposed to free a dog from his hungry feeling.
Is that really true? Maybe Heather & Gina would know.
I need some expert advice here!

Was this dog owner any kind of authority? Cuz this sounds like a quack! Green beans? How does that stop hunger for bacon?

Veggies should be part of a dog's diet so I'm happy you are getting some beans Joop.
Tell your human that you should also be eating carrots because they really are delicious -he may want to cook them slightly first (or grate them) because they tend to often come out the same as they went it..if you know what I mean. You can also try to persuade him to give you apples, bananas, celery, beets, anything at all in the squash family like cateloupe or zucchini. Just stay clear of anything citrus or cabbage-y. Happy eating.

Our humans met a lady who feeds her elderly (not that YOU are) and overweight lady dog *carrots*! The lady loves them! They nibble on them together!
Dogs over here who live around horses do tend to learn to love carrots (well, Tia doesn`t but I do (Tasha) so I always get a nibble when the horses get some! They are kinda sweet.
And of course, the dog food has vegetables in it. We won`t explain why in detail but it has to do with animal nutitionists` theories about why wild carnivores eat first if we kill a little animal.

Moin Joop..this is the bad housewife DKB..I am really astonished: as far as the dogs I know are concerned I can only say that it is absolutely NORMAL that dogs are permanently hungry and it doesn`t matter at all! Going back to their roots when they lived wild they had to eat everything ever passed their way cause they never knew when the next meal will come and owing to the fact that they had to bring food in they stomach for the family at home. For humans raw green beans are pure poison, they contain Phasin and to stop a dog from feeling hungry I never heard of.Dogs are no Gourmets, they are Gourmants and that`s ok.Give a sweet kiss to your humans to show them that they must not have a bad feeling....and I think that even serving beans will not free a real healthy dog from being permanently hungry.

It`s normal for dogs to always be concerned about where their next meal comes from. They certainly do that in the wild, so it`s still inbred, even if they are domesticated.
But I`m sure if you fill your belly with good healthy green beans, I don`t think there is anything wrong with that. :-)
Eet smaakelijk!!!

Joop, did you try eating the green beans? Did you like them if you did? all my dogs have been ready to eat anytime there has been any food nearby. I think it is normal for dogs to always be hungry. Cats are different this way.

I don`t think they`ll hurt you, Joop, and like room says, see if you like them. I know I like green beans. And Harry likes green beans. The Woo, of course, likes everything, especially cardboard. That girl can do a box quicker then you can blink an eye! Both Harry and The Woo are suffering a bit from that annoying middle age spred. And yes, according to them, they`re hungry all the time, cardboard or no. I rather think it`s a normal state of affairs for dogs, myself. A friend`s vet suggested carrots, which both our kids would now choose over a cookie. I reckon raw vegies are a good thing, eh? Er, you don`t look very enthused here. Did you try one?

the_nannish_one @ 2004-02-15 06:09 said:
Oh, one thing I might mention - large quantities of raw vegies tend to cause rather annoying intestinal gas in both Harry and The Woo. Annoying to them, I think, because of that bloated feeling. Annoying to humans, I know, because of that room clearing odor. You just might not want to eat too many vegies at once, ya know, big guy? Especially not if you intend to nap in the same room with yr humans.

It doesn`t look like you were too wild about the beans, Joop. Hmm, I`ve never heard that advice. I do love that black circle on the top of your sweet head. This is my first time to see that spot. Wonderful! Hugs from me and kisses from little Story.

"Did you enjoy eating the green beans, Joop? You don´t look so enthusiastic about them... But did them make your hungry feeling go away? I´ve heard beans contain lots of iron. Oh, iron? Doesn´t Miriam use that to make Luciana´s cloathes flat and smooth? Oh, dear! Did you feel all right after those beans, JooP?" Flô

There is this saying: You can lead a dog to green beans but you can`t make him eat" I suppose if they`re very fresh and snap satisfyingly when you bite them, it could do for a while. But I don`t believe anyone would suggest they`d replace a nice juicy bone or anything.
Miss Bear caught your eye, did she? She`s a lovely creature and my dear friend, but actually she and nan`s Harry are one and the same. (Harry Bear is her formal name) She probably needs some new portraits.

Joop, our mom gives us green beans when she thinks we are fat. We think we are never fat, but I guess she does. We do like green beans, but we don`t think they make us feel full...

Adding green beans to food is a great idea! You can also add canned pumpkin. The idea is to fill you up with fiber without adding calories.
But Joop ... you aren`t fat! You`re perfect in every way.

This is Heather, Joop, stepping in to add to Mom`s "expert" advice. (Mom writes a book on dogs -- "Dogs For Dummies" -- she thinks she knows everything ... not!) I think this green beans and pumpkin thing is ridiculous. I am NOT fooled into thinking it`s real food, and I do not like vegetables at all! But ... they do seem to help me keep my beautiful bitchy figure, so I guess that`s OK. Mom does mince the beans in the machine (I think it`s called a food processor), and then mixes that mush with REAL food. Almost hides the fact that there are green beans in the food, or so I pretend for her. But our noses know better, eh?

Oh, Joop, part of our job as dogs is to want to eat all the time! My humans have learned that, no matter how much I eat, I`m always ready to eat more if they`re offering something I like. (And, no matter how hungry I am, I won`t touch the stuff I don`t like.) I say, if you like the beans, enjoy! And hooray for the organic kind!

Well, Joop, this is an interesting survey.
Gus likes to eat. Period. He loves to eat anything people eat - except wasabi. It`s the begging that drives his people nuts. We will test the bean theory and see if that makes him happy. Or more to the point - full. It`s a little hard to tell from the angle of your pic but you look like you`re in mid chew - at least giving them a try.
Here`s Gus:

Thanks for the salutation :)
Now I think, we are back again, maybe with some breaks... We missed you all.
A meeting on Vancouver Island? That would be great - really! But how should we dogs come to that place? By airplane in the baggage room? No way! We need a private Jet to be together with our humans! But who of you humans can drive such a Jet?

As far as I know, green beans are an acquired tasts...for humans and dogs. I don`t know anyone who just `naturally`likes them. Maybe if your human sprinkles a little `surprise` on them, you will eat them and begin to acquire that taste.
I don`t know though, Joop. Seeing a bunch of green beans in a dog dish is a bit, shall we say, unnatural!!!!

Can`t help you with this one Joop, I really don`t like my food that much - I just nibble away at it throughout the day. But if someone drops in say, just one green bean, or a single pea, or a cheerio, then I will quickly gulp the whole dinner. So, yes, beans are good, anything human food is good in my eyes. But joop, you have such a svelte figure, I don`t think your humans need to worry too much about your food intake...

Sometimes we get canned green beans mixed equally with rice and some kind of protein, like chicken or beef. We had a dog named Sophie who was often sick and could not regular dog food, so my moms made our food everyday. They were ok in the mix, but in this photo they don`t look like what I want in my bowl. After Sophie died, we eventually went back to regular food. I do not eat very well, though, and sometimes I worry my mom because I don`t finish my food and sometimes I get too thin. Midnight eats everything, however, and he might even help you out if he was there.

Joop, My human has been visiting your flog every day for months, but is usally too shy to comment. She knows lots about dogs though, and here`s what she thinks. A dog needs to feel full when he eats. She siad that you should eat two servings of food a day instead of four. She understands that canned beans are what your human can feed you in addition to your food, to give your that full feeling and not get too many calories.
I was a pound dog too, and have been with my people for 10 years now. More about me later. Sheebah.
