Jean-Pierre Calloc'h

Île de Groix, Brittany, France

The great Breton poet and writer Jean-Pierre Calloc'h (Yann-Ber Kalloc'h, 1888-1917)
was born on Groix, the son of a fisherman.
He died in combat in World War I, near Urvillers-Cerizy (Aisne), his name appears in
the Panthéon with 546 other writers who were killed in the war.

One of his best known poems is "Me 'zo Ganet kreiz ar e mor" ("I was born in the middle of the sea"):
Je suis né au milieu de la mer
trois lieues au large;
j'ai une petite maison blanche là-bas,
le genêt croît près de la porte,
et la lande couvre les alentours.
Je suis né au milieu de la mer,
au pays d'Armor.
