Visegrád, Royal Town on the Danube

Visegrád, located in Hungary's Danube Bend region, on the narrowest part of the river, is home to an ancient citadel and a partially restored palace as well as some buildings by the late organic architect Imre Makovecz.

Built on a 350-meter-high hill in the 13th century by King Bela IV, Visegrád Citadel used to be one of the finest castles in Hungary. It also housed the Hungarian royal jewels until 1440 and again before the Turkish occupation. Its outer walls are intact, and the view over the Danube and surrounding countryside is spectacular.

The royal palace was built by King Bela IV around the same time as the citadel. It fell into dereliction after the Turkish invasion and was subsequently buried in a landslide. The ruins were discovered in 1934.
