We drove to Eilat, on the Gulf of Aqaba, in southern Israel so we could cross into Jordan for a day trip to Petra, the famous archeological city in the south of the country. Getting into Jordan wasn’t a problem, but re-entering Israel proved quite difficult. We hadn’t had our passports stamped for our initial entry into Israel so we could visit an Arab country, but the border authorities at Eilat balked at letting us back in. They also grilled me due to my press credential from Turkey, where I worked for a local newspaper, and wanted to know specifically what I was going to write about Israel. We managed to work it all out eventually and drove back to Tel Aviv and then flew back to Ankara.
