Cockies snacking out in front

Sulphur-crested cockatoos were everywhere in Canberra, and we often saw them in front of our house. They were joined here by a couple of galahs (foreground).

*****

After coming across a long-lost Turkish colleague now living in Australia, I decided to take a look at my pictures from the years we lived in Canberra -- 1985-87 -- our first overseas posting with the State Department. We enjoyed our time there, both living in the capitol city, where I did a BA at the Australian National University and also worked for a local vet, and traveling around the country.

A flock of birds I usually think of as exotic. Nice shot.

The birds in Australia seem so wild and interesting compared to here. V

This is quite the sight. Imagine seeing so many parrots at once, in the wild. I also remember the Galahs and Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, often in big flocks. VV

Always fun to see exotic birds out in the wild (although obviously, they're not so exotic there)

How exotic to see them instead of robins or starlings like back home.

How wonderful to see your impressions of our country. Love the emus and also the way your refer to the birds as "cockies". Thought only we called ulphur crested cockatoos that!! Great pics Helen.V

So amazing to see them in the "wild" like that.

interesting that what's exotic one place is commonplace another...they seem comfortable foraging close to a house..
