There was a heron that appeared to be on the shore far across the wetland, but when we got closer we realized it was on an island in the middle of the water. It was either sleeping or preening most of the time, but briefly looked up for this picture.

Taken at Huntley Meadows Park in Fairfax County, Virginia, a marvelous wetland, meadowland and forest area about a half hour outside Washington, D.C.
