Meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish and named for the snow-white limestone that spills down the mountainside, Pamukkale is a natural site in southwestern Turkey famous for its travertine terraces and thermal springs as well as for the ruins of the Roman city of Hieropolis. When we visited, the area didn’t look too good as it had been severely damaged by the overdevelopment of hotels, which were demolished after Pamukkale-Hieropolis was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. It now appears to have been restored to its natural beauty as shown in Cemil Gursen’s much more recent pictures: http://www.pbase.com/cemilgursen/pamukkale_turkey&page=4
