Sümela Monastery

Sümela Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery situated in the Pontic Mountains of Trabzon province at a height of about 1,200 meters (3,900 feet). It was founded in AD 386 during the reign of Emperor Theodosius and reached its present form in the 13th century during the Empire of Trebizond. The monastery was abandoned in 1923 following the forced removal of the Greek population in this region. Its primary function today is as a tourist attraction, but in 2015 the monastery was closed to visitors for three years due to necessary restoration and fieldwork stemming from an increase in rock falls. It was open when we were there, but the path to get to it was treacherous and scary. I seem to recall that Tim went, but I just looked at it from a distance.

Those monks sure liked grand isolation! Perhaps getting there was a test of faith.

An excellent composition. It always amazes me the way monasteries have been built in the most daunting of locations (but perhaps that's the point!)

Great view! What is it with Christian monasteries of those times that many of them in those parts were precariously perched on mountainsides? I would love to hike up to this place.
