This was taken with some difficulty at a local supermarket and is an example of what they call “Saudization” in the labor market. There is a drive to employ Saudis, including women, in jobs that were previously held by expats. This particular supermarket has all female cashiers, which I find very impressive and hopeful for the future. When we arrived here almost three years ago, we never once saw a woman working in a shop, even ones where the merchandise was clearly and exclusively for women. That is beginning to change.
