Now history

I guess I’m being nostalgic now, but this used to be the masthead for my newspaper, until it was taken over by the Turkish government (well, actually, it was the police using tear gas who stormed the building in the middle of the night on Friday). For anybody interested in seeing what happened I would recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fN9bqOlaKM -- it’s pretty shocking and hard for me to watch; I used to work in that building, starting from before it was launched in 2007, and some of those people are my friends.

Anyway, all of our names have been removed from the masthead, and now only the names of the three trustees appear. We are still producing a paper every day, which has shrunk from 20 to eight pages, but the content must be approved by the trustees, so it’s pretty much wires and features pieces. This isn’t sustainable, but I don’t know how long it will take for the paper to completely die. In fact, the entire staff seems to be dying a slow death.

Our last front page as an independent newspaper, posted earlier:

Another would be dictator.

How sad for your paper and the people of Turkey. I keep hearing how popular Erdogan is in Turkey. I hope they wake up soon to realize what a power grabbing dictator he is.

Yes, I see how personal this is for you as well a as tragedy in a country which embraced free press. How retrograde.

It's a big big shame!! Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is becoming a real dictator....

Sorry to hear this tragic and shocking news. The video shows horrible moments. Hope future will bring better days for the press in Turkey.
We are now struggling for democracy in Poland...

That is so sad. It seems like such a tragedy and a huge set back for freedom. It must such a heartbreaking thing to experience.

A sign of fear and concern by the government. Freedom can be fleeting but fear of various groups seems to be spreading in many places and not limited to just where you are. Good luck and be safe Helen.

Oh Helen, I am so sorry to learn of this news. It must have been so difficult for you. It is becoming very hard to watch the news both here and abroad. Stay safe!

Very sad to see more freedoms taken away. I'm sorry for all who worked so hard and lost so much.

You and your newspaper are the victims of the dramatic and present history of all this region of Middle East (Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia) and all the consequences of which we did not stop undergoing.
...Concerning Turkey, we can say that is not the best leaders that rule it !

Wow, so the newspaper really is, essentially, no more. This outrages me. And saddens me, but I can imagine you must feel sick about it.

Helen, I feel the same as Gerard. Sad things happen right now and a lot of people are worried over here...
Take care!

sorry to hear how things are going on...Difficult times there

Very sorry to read your explaination for the newspaper and I think now the Turkish government is far worst than our government, Helen !

So sorry to hear about this. I know your job has been hectic, but also very fulfilling. Perhaps having more time for yourself won't be such a bad thing!
