Family only

Many large stores and supermarkets here have a “family only” cashier, which means that only women, women with their families or men accompanying their wives can use them. Men not accompanied by a woman are definitely prohibited. They afford a measure of privacy, especially to women not accompanied by anybody. They also have regular cashiers where the general public can pay, including women if they so desire.

This, BTW, is one of my favorite stores in Riyadh, a sort of hardware/home furnishing/kitchenware/garden and such place. I can spend hours there and always find things to buy that I didn’t know I needed. They also carry a lot of American products, which is quite nice.

A work in progress, the last of the “monkey quest” series, posted earlier:

Apart from the Family Only signs, this could be any big store anywhere! A fascinating glimpse again into life over there. V

With the signs and metal columns, it reminds me of an airport. Always fascinating captures. V

I like the idea of separating the families a little. I would love to be away from crying children and tired, irritable Moms when I shop here in the U.S. But over there, I would be stuck with them, since I'm a woman.

This is great! So many categories just for shopping. I think I stay here.
