Hallgrímskirkja is a Lutheran parish church in Reykjavík. At 73 meters (244 ft), it is the largest church in Iceland and the sixth tallest architectural structure in the country, visible from 20 kilometers away. It caused great controversy during the 34 years it took to build it (1940-1974). The columns on either side of the tower represent volcanic basalt, a favorite motif of Icelandic nationalists.
