Built in the 17th century as part of the city's defenses, this fortress had fallen into ruin by the 18th century and was then used as an orphanage and garbage dump. The Germans fixed it up during World War I to store ammunition, and during the Soviet period it was used to store vegetables. It's now a museum but under reconstruction, so was closed when we visited.
