Vilnius Cathedral was first built as a Christian church on the site of a pagan temple in 1251, although the current church dates mainly from the 18th century. It was closed by the Soviets in 1950 and intended to be used as a garage for truck repairs, but in 1956 it opened as a picture gallery. It was returned to the Catholic Church in 1989 and reconsecrated a year before Lithuanian independence.
