I've struggled with the distortion in this image, and have come to the conclusion that the gate is hung crooked, which is pretty common around here (our is). Almost all the houses on Capitol Hill have cast iron fences, gates and stairs, which were all reportedly made in the District of Columbia in the late 19th century.
