Mahiole
(Feather Helmet)

The Mahiole was worn by Hawaiian Royalty. This Mahiole is a symbol for King Kamehameha I, the
monarch who unified the Hawaiian Islands, and his birthplace in nearby Kohala.
Sean K.L. Browne was born in Hilo, Hawai'i in 1953 and is a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools in
Honolulu. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Redlands, Calivornia, and
a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
This piece stands at the Administrative Office Building complex at Kona International Airport at
Keahole, on the Big Island of Hawai'i. It was funded and installed in 2000 by the State
Foundation on Culture and the Arts within their program for placing Art in Public Places.
