Interest

view map

Interest, not only in us, but our interest in her. She strolled right up to us, me and
another guy, put her hand out and asked how we were, in perfect english. Usually not a
very mind blowing experience, I know, but you have to consider that this woman lived in
a very "strict" Islamic part of the world, Nubia to be exact (or not so exact). We hadn't
seen a person who spoke any english at all in three days, nor did we see anymore for
another two, not to mention, living across the Nile from any english speaking tourists
that may happen to pass by.

She was very well spoken, confident like I've never seen an Islamic woman before and had
no inhibition or fright in walking right up to us and having an infidel touch her (only a
handshake). This, even with local men around. She invited us for lunch, introduced us to her
mother and told us about her husband. Hmmm, interesting.

So, being in a "crunch for time" so to speak, not understood whatsoever by the people of Nubia,
or anywhere else in Africa for that matter, we politely declined, wondered where or who in
the world taught her english and walked away wishing we had more time.

Taken at a town next to (south of) the Temple of Soleb, across the nile from the town of Wawa, Sudan.

A few more women of Sudan, what a wonderful bunch they are:
