20160209 115 SERIES - Coopers Hawk.jpg

Our yard

Six images of our visiting Cooper's Hawk finally catching dinner, one of the many House sparrows residing in our yard.

Top image: After having sat stationary for considerable time, staring into the bushes, the Hawk suddenly dove down.........

..... right into the bush it had been watching.

It went right through the bush and came out the other side. It spread out its wings, presumably in an attempt to prevent its intended victim from escaping or to facilitate a quick jump up. Here it is intently staring into the bush. Then suddenly......

.....it jumped/flew up as if pouncing on something. I was too close and not fast enough to catch the entire action/bird. From here it immediately flew to the top of the adjacent fence......

....Again, I was too slow to capture the short jump/flight to the fence, however, the camera did catch the poor Sparrow.

The Hawk sat on the fence only for a moment with the Sparrow secured below its talons. It then flew off to the woods behind our house. Presumably it caught sight of me through the kitchen window from where all these shots were taken.

I feel so sorry for the little sparrow, but I know that the hawk has to eat too. Your shots are spectacular.

If that doesn't tell a story of survival...
