Ready to flick aside another small piece of wood chiseled from the nest hole.


Digging for more wood and.......


...coming up with a beak full which he tosses over his shoulder.

I took these images a couple of years ago, thinking that surely one of these would be the nest site. But alas, no such luck. Apparently the males make several holes/homes for inspection by his lady whom supposedly then decides which one she likes best. In this case, I observed him making two large cavities, but I never did find the nest tree.
