20120712 - 2 294 SERIES - White-faced Meadowhawk3.jpg

Ottawa West

Three different crops of this Dragonfly. Thanks for your SUPER site on Dragonflies Chris. It led me to the I.D., which I hope I got right. See http://www.pbase.com/reflectionsofnature for Chris's site, it is SUPER.

Top image: Close-up head-shot/crop.

Partial body and head shot/crop. Note the red droplets on the abdomen. I first thought that these might be eggs; however, a friend identified them as parasitic mites.

Full body shot. Again, note the red parasitic mites on the abdomen.

Fantastic shots, Hank. The head shot is phenomenal! Dragonflies are very prone to being afflicted by these mites. And not just odonates, but many insects are so afflicted.

Incredible detail, Hank! Do you normally use the 7.1 f stop for dragonflies? Also, I have seen several crane flies with similar red mites. Interesting stuff!
