Three images of Fox Sparrows.
Fox Sparrows pass through our region in the Spring and Fall. They are typically ground feeders and may show up a backyard feeders. I first saw them at my feeders last Fall. Generally, Fox Sparrows are difficult to photograph as they are quite skittish. They often accompany flocks of Dark-eyed Juncos. In this instance, we set out some seeds on an old log next to a walking trail. Immediately, the Chickadees come to feast, followed closely by Nuthatches, then by Dark-eyed Juncos and finally by several very hesitant Fox Sparrows. Repeatedly, Red Squirrels would interrupt their feeding. However, with a little persuasion and a few peanuts, the Squirrels would leave, the birds would return and we could continue shooting. This is the closest I've ever been to photograph a Fox Sparrow. Condition were overcast, allowing for good capture of the Sparrows colours.
