20100927 - 2 108 Belted Kingfisher NX2 - 3 SERIES.jpg

Mud Lake, Ottawa

Two images of a female Belted Kingfisher.

Top Image: This particular day, I didn't feel like carrying my heavy camera/lens/tripod. Instead I decided to just do some hand-held shooting with my 70-300mm lens. As we were about to return to our vehicles, there was this Kingfisher, just across a small bay backed by the most colourful foliage. I quickly took some shots, but wished I had not been so lazy and brought my 500mm lens. The above image is a considerable crop.

After shooting the top image, I hurried to my vehicle to get my other camera and 300mm f2.8 lens + 1.4 T.C., not expecting the Kingfisher to be still there when I got back. In fact when I returned to the spot, the Kingfisher had moved to an other, slightly more distant tree. This image was taken at 420mm with the Kingfisher at the new location.

Great shots of this difficult subject. The oak leaves in the first shot are a very unique background for this bird.

These little guys move so quickly that I usually only get a quick glimpse as they fly by. I've never been able to get a decent shot of one. I am very impressed with the quality of these, especially considering the limitations of your equipment at hand.

Fine Hank!

Marvellous shots, Hank - these birds are never easy and to get it with your 70 to 300 is impressive.
