These are the only Red-headed Woodpeckers that I've seen. However,I had not seen the pair together in one spot before, let alone getting a shot of them together. Whilst photographing the one Woodpecker busy excavating a hole (presumably for nesting in) it suddenly called out. Almost immediately its mate appeared and landed on the far side of the first. Almost as quickly, the first one took off. I managed only one shot of the pair. It seems that a changing of the guard was in order, it being the other's turn to work. It appears that like some other Woodpeckers, the Red-headed take turns excavating the nest cavity. Reportedly, they also take turns incubating the eggs.
