20100319 070 Pileated Woodpecker SERIES.jpg

Home Depot Special - "ONE BIG HAMMER DRILL"

Six Images - six views of Woodies bill.

The male and female Pileated Woodpecker seem to take turns banging away at and excavating large cavities in various trees. They have been hard at it for the past week. They sure can chisel out large vertical holes and/or drill nice, perfectly round holes with their sharply pointed beaks

I'm not sure if they are just looking for food or trying to find a new place to set up house. It seems they have been kicking tires for several days now, not quite sure of the neighbourhood or whether they want a one or two story abode. I'm just glad he/she isn't drumming on my behind. That's some BILL they have.

Nicely done Hank and I hope you had a sawdust filter on your lens '-)

I saw the male last week cleaning out an existing hole( leaves etc,) for about 5 minutes. I thought that was unusual since I believed they always excavated a new home every year...maybe it was a previous home and he went on auto mode (?)
