20100127 306 House Finch (M).jpg

Fletcher's Gardens

I would love some help with the I.D. of this one. Initially, I had labeled it and others like it as "House Finches". It was later suggested to me by a fellow Pbase member that they were "Purple Finches". I double checked my bird books and concluded that in fact they seemed to be "Purple Finches; hence I changed the labels. Yesterday a Pbase friend suggested that he was sure that my original I.D. of "House Finch was correct. Suggestions anyone??

Note added.

Thank you Chris, Jess, Tom, January, Jay and Christine, a House Finch it is.

I regret it's unlikely I'll see one of these beauties in Florida as it's beyond their range. After studying my Sibley guide, I've concluded that you've seen the House Finch, Hank. The streaking on the flanks seems to make that pretty clear. It would be nice to have seen and photographed the female(s) nearby which are a little more distinguishable between the species. I'd be really hard pressed to distinguish the Pacific and Eastern male Purple Finch under circumstances excluding knowledge of the location of the shot again with the benefit of seeing the female in the vicinity. Fun post.

Cannot see the wing bars well Hank but looks like a brown cap that would indicate a House Finch...just my observation...hard to tell as they vary a lot...and I am in the west so it is only a guess...
