While based at the Big Sky ski resort in southwestern Montana, I opted to take a couple of days off from my skiing pursuits to tour the many landscape and wildlife wonders of Yellowstone National Park located about 45 miles to the south. Touring Yellowstone in the winter doesn't leave one with many options. The park is closed to private vehicle traffic. The roads are not plowed, but groomed to allow for snowmobile and snowcoach access only. A guide is also required for touring the park. Because of the photographic equipment I wanted to bring into the park (a couple of cameras, 3 lenses and a tripod), I chose to travel via snowcoach as I figured I'd have more room for all my junk. If you've never been to Yellowstone in the winter, it really is a must-see. Beautiful wintry landscapes abound and the network of rivers which never freeze over (due to the runoff of thermal water within the park) acts as a magnet for a variety of wildlife. Wildlife that we saw included bison, elk, coyotes, eagles, trumpeter swans, a variety of waterfowl and even a wolf (although it didn't cooperate photographically).
