I'm willing to bet the vast majority of people in Ottawa do not realize flying squirrels may be in their neighbourhood. Flying squirrels are nocturnal creatures and few people actually get to see one during daylight hours.

Flying squirrels don't actually fly but rather glide using the fold of skin that stretches from the front legs to the hind legs. The furry but flat tail helps the squirrel steer left and right when in flight.
