I have heard from others that this barred owl is actively hunting into the afternoon. This was my experience too. Initially we saw it sleeping and kept our distance. It rotated its head from time to time. A flock of common redpolls flew over to protest. After awhile, something caused the owl to become very alert. It flew to a higher perch (missed that part because I was pre-occupied) to the right (pictured above) and stared down at the deep snow. I thought for sure anytime it was going to fly down to catch whatever was scurrying beneath. The owl did this for maybe 10 minutes or more. It was still up on that perch when I left. Wish I had stayed to see what would have happened as I enjoy observing owl behaviour. Hope to revisit in a few more days.
