Normally black terns at this marsh build nests well away from human traffic, except for one pair that chose to set up camp a mere 7 feet from a very busy boardwalk. This resulted in it being the most photographed and watched pair of black terns I know of. Many were hoping to see black tern chicks.

Unfortunately, strong winds and heavy precipiation in late June doomed most if not all of the nests as rising waters encroached on the eggs. Pictured above was the last holdout with parent birds diligently tending to 3 unhatched eggs. Last I heard, they too had abandonned nest. Went back to check and there is no sign of the nest or eggs.
