Green-Winged Teal

Ottawa, Ontario. Canada.

This male was photographed in a pond along the inner loop of the Jack Pine Trail. There are at least a dozen Green-Winged Teals in this one pond. There are teals in some of the other ponds as well along the Jack Pine Trail.

Early mornings are best before it gets busy and the teals stay further back in the pond away from the boardwalk. Patience is rewarded as the teals come very close to the boardwalk from time to time, particulary early to mid-morning, especially near the muskrat lodge on the right side near the bullrushes.

This is one of my better photos of the species (about 85% full-frame) thanks mostly to an immature Northern Goshawk which flew low over the pond and perched right over where the teals were feeding. This drove the teals out into the open after the Goshawk had flown off.
